Nordic Brain Network (NBN) is a research team and collaborative forum led by Professor Miia Kivipelto, M.D., Ph.D. The NBN has increased the resources available to the field of Alzheimer’s disease research and promoted collaboration among Nordic countries, with its members primarily working in Sweden and Finland. The NBN also collaborates with numerous international researchers from various regions in the world. Members of NBN have identified several modifiable and treatable risk factors for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, including interactions between genetic and environmental factors, and they have developed the first tool for predicting dementia risk 20 years later based on midlife risk profiles.
This has paved the way to prevention trials, in which the team has recently published findings on a multidomain intervention targeting modifiable risk factors to prevent cognitive decline and dementia (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability [FINGER] study. The NBN has also contributed to understanding biological mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease, and to developing biomarkers that can aid early diagnosis, prognosis and treatment monitoring in Alzheimer’s disease. Finally, NBN is actively involved in several phase I-III randomized controlled trials with potential disease-modifying drugs.
